Sydney Roosters vs Canberra Raiders Preview
A pivotal encounter for both teams with the 11th-placed Sydney Roosters desperate to build some momentum and seventh-placed Canberra looking to bounce back from a pre-bye beatdown.
The Roosters held on for a gutsy 18-16 win in Newcastle last week on the back of massive performances from stand-in fullback Joey Manu and makeshift prop Nat Butcher.
Luke Keary left the field early but has been cleared of a jaw fracture in a major boost for the injury-ravaged squad.
Keary has been named to play, which sees Manu return to centre with James Tedesco named to back up from Origin.
Butcher will come off the bench with Queensland prop Lindsay Collins named to start and Victor Radley is back from suspension at lock.
The Raiders could drop as low as 10th with a loss here after bookending recent wins in Sydney over Souths (33-26) and Wests Tigers (20-19) – extremely fortunately in the latter – with heavy home defeats to Manly (42-14) and the Warriors (36-14).
Unable to get on top of the Warriors despite dominating first-half territory and possession, the Raiders failed to turn up after the break and leaked five tries.
Ricky Stuart’s preoccupation with Jarrod Croker’s 300th game has stunted the rhythm of a side that had won seven of its last eight.
The Raiders’ 17 is unchanged with Hudson Young backing up from Origin.
The Roosters have won six of the teams’ last nine encounters, but the Raiders took out their sole clash last season 22-16 at GIO Stadium with both sides missing their Origin contingent.
The Roosters won 16 of their last 17 against the Raiders at the pre-development Allianz Stadium (SFS).
Arguably the biggest coin-flip of Round 17, the Roosters are perhaps surprising $1.65 favourites given they haven’t won back-to-back games since Round 9, but they are 4-1 at Allianz Stadium in 2023.
